Day 1 - Campo De'Fiori
Saturday, 22 December 2007

Final destination of the night was Campo De'fori. It's a shopping district with pretty expansive price tag. Damus saw this pair of nice shoes that cost Euro 200! Ex!! So we end up going back empty handed.

Campo dei Fiori, translated literally from Italian, means "field of flowers." Tradition would have it that the name comes from Flora, Pompeo's lover, but more likely it comes from the fact that in the late 1300's, the piazza was abandoned for a brief period, and became a meadow. Since 1869 it has been the home to a vibrant and colorful market. In the center rises the monument to Giordano Bruno, who in 1600 was burned here at the stake as a heretic for contending that the universe has no center.

Capital punishments used to be held publicly in Campo dei Fiori: in Vasi's etching the tall permanent gibbet stands in the horse and cattle market. Here, on 17 February 1600, the philosopher Giordano Bruno was burnt alive by the Roman Inquisition because his ideas were deemed dangerous. In 1887 Ettore Ferrari dedicated a monument to him on the exact spot of his death: he stands defiantly facing the Vatican, reinterpreted in the first days of a reunited Italy as a martyr to freedom of speech.
